Membership

The European Wool Association is a membership-driven organisation led by industry leaders, sheep and wool experts, and academics.

The Association was founded by an enthusiastic group of individuals representing 14 European countries and was officially registered in August 2022.

Following the decision of the meeting of the first general assembly, the Founders of EWA are looking to increase the membership of the Association in two ways.

The first is to identify and invite sector leaders from all links in the wool supply and marketing chains to become voting full members of the Association. Individual or legally registered organisations based in the 53 countries, states, or dependencies regarded as part of Europe will be considered based on their background and information provided in the application forms. Candidature of full voting members will be subject to a referral and, in the first instance, the consideration of the Board of EWA and in the future of a specially delegated membership committee. Membership is driven by the needs and desires for the development of our wool sectors, and candidates becoming members will be expected to take an active and creative role in the development of the Association. Full membership fees set by the General Assembly are currently €125 annually. The second way will be to open an Associated Membership for all our active followers and supporters. This membership group is very important to us and is our main consultative group for decisions regarding EWA. Again, it is a group we seek to actively involve in the Association by contributing to publications, organising and/or participating in EWA events whether virtually or in attendance at workshops and training, conferences, or supporting at agricultural fairs and shows. The processes for application and the benefits of joining this group are being finalised, and a link to an application form is available on the webpage. Associate membership fees have been set at €30 annually.

ALL MEMBERS AND ASSOCIATES WILL BE EXPECTED TO ABIDE BY THE RULES AND FOLLOW THE OBJECTIVES OF EWA AS STATED IN THE ARTICLES OF ASSOCIATION (STATUTES).

Important Survey on Wool Collecting Systems in Europe

Dear stakeholder,
We are pleased to announce an important survey initiated by the European
Wool Association to explore and enhance the understanding of how wool
across Europe is transferred from the sheep to the processor.

There are two channels for this:

a. Private trade – the farmer sells greasy wool to a merchant, who then
sells the wool (greasy, scoured, or combed) to the manufacturer, large
or small.

b. Auction – farmers' associations gather their wool, classify it, and
then sell it at auction to merchants or manufacturers.

Generally, in major wool-producing regions such as Australia, New
Zealand, South Africa, and South America, both channels ensure that
greasy wool leaves the farm and enters the international wool
manufacturing system.

In Europe, despite being the third-largest wool-producing continent, the
heavy reliance on private trade in the vast majority of European nations
is not performing as hoped. The international wool price and demand are
insufficient for farmers or merchants to cover their costs. There is no
national wool promotion in almost all of Europe.

Fortunately, there is a shift towards natural fibres and European
processing, rather than Asian synthetic fibre manufacturing. This could
provide a stimulus for the whole of Europe to bring its wool industry
into the 21st century. Although some excellent organisations are already
operating in parts of Europe, many areas have almost no infrastructure.

Now may be the time for the larger wool-producing nations to be part of
a European standardised wool collection network, hopefully with active
farmer participation. Perhaps several large depots with grading and
press-packing facilities, along with many smaller temporary collection
centres, all providing information, training, wool promotion, and sales
while guaranteeing quality. Private trading must still be encouraged, as
their coexistence is essential to a healthy wool market. Smaller nations
can join larger operations.

Within this survey, we aim to evaluate the entire status quo of wool
collection in Europe, including small farmers' initiatives as well as
regional or national wool collecting and marketing depots, and
everything in between.

input will help shape the future of how European wool can once again
become an important player in world wool markets, ensuring
sustainability, economic viability, and responsiveness to future market
demands.
