From farm to yarn: Finnish circular wool model highlighted by EU CAP Network

The EU CAP Network has published a new article showcasing the fully circular wool model developed by Finnish sheep farmer and wool producer Satu Kumpulainen of Isokumpu Farm in western Finland. As an expert in the Focus Group 57 “Innovative and sustainable ways to strengthen the role of farmers in revitalising the European wool value chain”, and a long‑standing Board member of the European Wool Association, Satu demonstrates how on‑farm processing can create high‑quality, low‑carbon wool products while keeping added value with the farmer.

On 30 hectares in the Ostrobothnia region, Isokumpu Farm raises around 400 Finnsheep and Kainuu Grey ewes, both native Finnish breeds. All steps from shearing to sorting, scouring, dyeing, drying, spinning and selling the finished yarn take place on the farm in close cooperation with an on‑site spinning mill, creating an almost carbon‑neutral, low‑waste production system. High‑quality yarns and selected garments are sold via the farm shop, a few local retailers and online, with around 20% of sales going to international customers.

The model shows how careful shearing techniques, targeted use of second‑class wool for felting or as biodegradable ground cover, and the integration of renewable energy and water reuse can significantly reduce waste and environmental impact. At the same time, it supports the conservation and valorisation of endangered native breeds, whose wool can become a valuable product for farmers rather than a cost. Through her work with the European Wool Association and the Finnish Shearers Association, Satu uses this practical example to promote a circular bioeconomy for wool and to inspire similar initiatives across Europe.
