Native Sheep Breeds Calendar
Discover the Calendar of Europe’s Endangered Sheep Breeds
For the first time, we are proud to present a calendar that shines a spotlight on highly endangered native sheep breeds from across Europe.
Each page tells the unique story of these rare breeds, captured through the dedication and vision of Satu Kumpulainen, EWA board member and breeder of Kainuu Grey Sheep (Kainuun harmaa). Satu is passionately committed to the preservation of this rare and endangered breed from Finland. The Kainuu Grey Sheep is known for its distinctive grey, fine fleece, which is perfect for high-quality textiles, and its exceptional ability to thrive in the harsh Nordic climate. With only a few hundred animals remaining, the breed is at risk due to economic pressures, a limited genetic pool, and the decline of traditional sheep farming. Targeted breeding programmes and the promotion of wool and meat as sustainable products are actively helping to safeguard this valuable breed in Finland. The Kainuu Grey Sheep (Kainuun harmaa) represents not only biodiversity but also a unique cultural heritage that Satu and other dedicated breeders aim to preserve for future generations.
The Kainuu Grey Sheep is just one of 11 extremely endangered sheep breeds featured in this unique calendar, each introduced through the stories of their devoted breeders.
A special month is dedicated to the European Wool Association, highlighting our work to support rare native European sheep breeds. By doing so, we preserve traditions while protecting biodiversity.
Immerse yourself in these fascinating stories and support our efforts to protect rare native sheep breeds and their wool across Europe.
